One of Amsterdam’s infrastructure projects is the Central Station expansion. Central Station is set for a significant transformation to increase its capacity and enhance passenger convenience, with construction slated for completion by 2030. Detailed plans, published in the Netherlands Government Gazette, outline key improvements such as replacing steel bridges, building a new crossing at Dijksgracht, reducing the number of tracks from 10 to nine, and upgrading platforms to be wider and longer. Pedestrian movement will be streamlined through the renovation of existing tunnels and the addition of new escalators, lifts, and stairs.
The project, developed by architectural firm ZJA in collaboration with Braaksma & Roos Architectenbureau and IGG, is designed to meet the expected rise in daily users from 200,000 to 275,000 over the next ten years. These changes align with the government’s Future Vision 2040 rail strategy, which aims to provide faster train services to Randstad and other regions, while also making international rail travel more appealing. The upgrades will strengthen regional links, improving access to cities such as Alkmaar, Hoorn, and Castricum, and ensuring that the station is equipped to handle future demand efficiently.
Zuidasdok Project
The
Zuidasdok project is among the Netherlands’ largest infrastructure undertakings, designed to improve access to Amsterdam and the northern Randstad region. A section of the A10 South motorway will be tunneled, creating 120,000 square meters of space for green areas and expanding Amsterdam Zuid station, which is rapidly becoming the city’s second-largest transit hub. The motorway will also see two additional lanes added in each direction, with redesigned interchanges at De Nieuwe Meer and Amstel to ease traffic flow. Upgrades to Amsterdam Zuid station include a widened Minervapassage and a new Brittenpassage entrance, ensuring it can handle the growing number of passengers.
